The Witch of Prague (Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural)
by F. Marion Crawford
from Wordsworth
As I fell the thing sprang across me and seemed to throw itself upon the captain. When I last saw him on his feet his face was white and his lips set. It seemed to me that he struck a violent blow at the dead being, and then he, too, fell forward upon his face, with an inarticulate cry of horror. This unique collection contains all the supernatural works of the prolific F. Marion Crawford (1854 1909), including his classic chillers For Blood is the Life , The Upper Berth and the title story, The Screaming Skull which was based on a true horror legend. Also included in this volume is his amazing novel The Witch of Prague which Dennis Wheatley described as a classic of occult fiction. For a potent blend of horror, fantasy and fear Crawford s tales have rarely been surpassed. Most of these stories have long been out of print, so this collection is a special treat for all lovers of supernatural mysteries.
*OP For the Blood is the Life
by F. Marion Crawford
from White Wolf Publishing
F. Marion Crawford, a popular romantic novelist of the Victorian period, is mostly remembered for the eight supernatural tales collected in For the Blood Is the Life. As Darrell Schweitzer points out in the introduction, Crawford's stories are admirably straightforward, without the long framing or scene-setting devices common in his day. The tales include ghostly vengeance, a family curse, madness caused by guilt, and terror at sea. The poetic, subtle title story is about a female vampire in southern Italy. Best of all, though, is "The Upper Berth, " which was praised by H. P. Lovecraft as "Crawford's weird masterpiece ... one of the most tremendous horror-stories in all of literature. In this tale of a suicide-haunted stateroom such things as spectral salt-water damage, the strangely open porthole, and the nightmare struggle with the nameless object are handled with incomparable dexterity."

The Witch of Prague (Wildside Fantasy)
by F. Marion Crawford
from Wildside Press
"Illustrated. The witch Unorna pursues true love. While she is being pursued by Israel Kafka who is madly in love with her, Unorna falls madly in love with ""The Wanderer,"" who goes about the world in search of his long lost love, Beatrice. Unorna is not able to make the Wandered fall in love with her without making many attempts at casting spells on him and plotting against anyone who comes in her way. Can her hypnotic powers succeed, and can she free herself from her agony through the purity of her love? By Marion Crawford"
This is a book about a witch who is not old and ugly as you would normally think a witch would be. She uses her powers for herself and makes slaves by hypnotizing them with her multi-colored eyes. She is not an evil person, but she does use her powers unethically. Her need for love pushes her to have dealings with a wizard that she comes to regret. This is not unlike the play "the Phantom of the Opera". Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year.
